Companionship

It's been three months since Sayla died. On the day she died, we had been working in the garden on the first day of my vacation between leaving one job and starting another. It was a beautiful Spring day, and we had been enjoying planting the vegetable garden. After we returned from the vet, we finished the work, grateful for the physical labor. We dubbed it the Sayla Vee Memorial Vege Garden.

Today, we spent the day in the garden, weeding the entire yard and harvesting cucumbers and peppers. As we were puttering around, we suddenly realised that this was the first day we'd spent together in the garden since that day. Well, the garden has shown its full promise, giving us loads of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, kale, radishes and peppers, with okra to come. It's given us so much pleasure, so I'm glad we finished the job. And we've been joined by a new companion. Tina was more than content to follow us around, laying down near wherever we were working. She never demanded attention or ate anythign she shouldn't. She was the perfect working companion.

Later, the transition from Sayla to Tina was made complete when I found her lying on the bathmat, guarding me for the first time in the shower (such a dangerous place - I've seen Psycho). She picked the right day to find a job.

Right now, she and Dylan are completely buggered and are sleeping deeply. Gardening is such hard work! Mark and I are watching the final stage of the Tour De France, as Carlos Sastre rides into Paris.
