The Mango Goddess

It's convention time. Democrats first and it's been an interesting week. I've not watched every minute like some kind of sporting tournament, but instead watched the highlights - Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. And I've not been disappointed. Michelle Obama is a wonderful speaker - engaging. comfortable, able to control her tone, intonation and able to add hand gestures to help get her message across. Joe Biden was a great attack dog and gave a good tatse of what's to come.

But I want to talk about Senator Clinton. As many of you know, I struggled with who to vote for in the VA primary, but eventually decided to vote for Clinton for a myriad of reasons. And watching her speech at the DNC a couple of nights ago, made me glad that I had. Not only was it beautifully written (kudos to her speechwriter!), but she completely sold it. She's often been a bit of a wooden speaker, but in this instance, she was fluid, inspiring, humorous and simply brilliant. Not only did she have the courage to dress in a mango colored suit, (God, I pity male politicians who have so few choices to make on style), but she seemed perfectly at ease with her decision to drop out and support Obama, and at ease with her role to unite the party.

My favorite lines:

"My mother was born before women could vote and she lived to watch her grandaughter vote for her mother."

(Trying to encourage her supporters to cast their votes for Barak Obama) "Were you in this campaign for me? Or were you in it for that Marine, or that woman with cancer?"

I confess that I cried. Not because I was ever a diehard Clinton supporter, but rather because of the symbolism of the first woman to have come so close to the presidency. It gave me hope.
