I'd had two weeks off over the holidays and Tuesday's swim was really challenging because of that. And on Thursday, swim was my third workout of the day, so I was swimming on fumes (not helped by literally forgetting to eat dinner). However, against all odds, I actually felt comfortable in the water. I finally managed to coordinate my kick with my stroke, as well as keeping each to the minimum - gliding rather than thrashing through the water. And, for the first time, I didn't completely fall apart as I got tired, and in the middle of the workout, I swam three 100s and the first two were 1:56, which is about 10 seconds faster than I normally do! I didn't even feel as though I was pushing the pace - just nice and easy Z2.
I know with swimming that this is a brief victory and next week I'll be back to feeling crappy in the water. But I also know from experience with swimming that it's two steps forward and one step back, so this feeling will return and next time it might even last two workouts.
End of a very long and very hard week at work. 20 miles on foot tomorrow and 60 on the bike on Sunday. I've conquered my fear of hills - now I have a fear of flats and using the exact same muscles for 3.5 hrs. It'll be interesting if nothing else.
