A word about mantras

When I'm half way up the final 11 mile climb, or shuffling along in the pitch dark of River Road, I have no idea what I'll be thinking about or what will most help me turn the pedals one more time or pick up my feet and keep move forward. But over the last few days, as I've crossed off my final workouts and thought back over the past year, certain words and phrases have been returning to mind.

First, there are words of inspiration: Create Change, Love, Take Chances, Dream, Be Brave, Hope, Find a Passion, Wisdom, Honesty, Balance, Integrity, Faith, Courage.

Then there are the words I wrote on my sling: This will not stop me. I will be an Ironman.

Finally, there are the words that have grown in significance for me in the past two weeks: Tinana Kaha. Wairua Kaha. Wahine Toa. Strong Body. Strong Spirit. Strong Woman.

Kia kaha. Be strong.
